  • In March 1934, the 7,000 Bibby liner S.S. Herefordshire ran aground on rocks at Cardigan Island. It was being towed by two tugs from Dartmouth to Port Glasgow in order to be broken up, when the ropes broke and the ship went adrift. Hundreds of local people watched as the four men aboard the vessel were rescued through the use of rocket life-saving equipment that was kept at Gwbert. Items from the Herefordshire were later auctioned in Cardigan and many of them are still in the possession of local people. Source: W. J.   • Built in Cardiff in 1873 and weighing 140 tons, 'Ezel' was one of the few ships registered in Cardigan in the late 19th century. Over three hundred ships were registered at the port at the turn of the 19th century, but it had since then entered a period of decline, partly due to the accumulation of silt on the riverbed. The 'Ezel' was sunk by German submarine gunfire in the English Channel in 1917.
