  • A regimental drum of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, dating from the late 19th century.  The regiment has changed its name several times, reflecting the changing role of the regiment within the British Armed Forces.  In 1877, the regiment accepted an offer to transfer into the Special Reserve section of the Royal Engineers, which gave it a far more active role in warfare.

  • Regimental drum of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, dating from the turn of the 20th century.  This drum has a metal shell, with wooden hoops and metal tension rods for tightening the skin.

  • During the Second World War, a kit for testing the suitability of water for drinking was invaluable to soldiers on the move.

  • An officer's swordstick, carried mainly for ceremonial purposes, concealing a blade in what looks like an officer's cane.  The European swordstick originated in the late 18th century, when the carrying of swords openly with civilian dress became unfashionable.  They allowed a blade to be carried for defensive or offensive purposes, as long as it was concealed.

  • A set comprising Bible, New Testament, and Book of Common Prayer, which belonged to a serviceman in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.  A dedication inside the cover of the Book of Common Prayer reads: 'Loving Birthday Wishes from Vivien, 24th November 1942.'
