  • Port Talbot Docks were opened in 1839 and enlarged in 1896 / 98 with the main trade at the docks being coal exports. After World War II, iron ore imports became the dominant trade goods.

Following the construction of the Tidal Harbour, the dock closed in 1972, however, it has recently re-opened for limited traffic.

  • Since this photograph was taken all of the properties shown have been converted to commercial use and their forecourts have disappeared. The area has also been pedestrianised.

  • The four-masted barque S. S. Amazon was driven on to the beach at Margam in a severe gale. Tragically the ship broke up in the storm with the loss of all the crew.

  • Port Talbot has altered greatly since this photograph was taken, however the distinctive corner of the right-hand side of this building allows this view to be located accurately.
