  • In writing her cookbook it was the wish of Augusta Hall (Lady Llanover, 1802-96) to provide a cookery manual for young women who had no prior knowledge of the subject, and to preserve some of the Welsh recipes with which she was familiar.

  • Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was a prolific writer of fantasy fiction who provided an influence for many who have subsequently written in this field, however, in his later years this Caerleon born author suffered greatly from financial uncertainty. To ease his situation his friends arranged an 80th birthday lunch at which he was presented with a cheque consisting of donations from them all. This text records the speech that he gave at this event.
