  • This photograph was taken at the balancing or overflow tanks at the Cowlyd Waterworks, Dolgarrog, in June 1902, during a visit by members of the Conway and Colwyn Bay Joint Water Board. The Board was established in the late 1890s in a bid to procure an independent and sufficient water supply for the rapidly developing towns of Colwyn Bay, Conwy and Degannwy. After considering a number of options, the Board decided upon a scheme to draw water from Llyn Cowlyd, high above Dolgarrog in the Conwy Valley.

  • Ivy House was the first stone house to be built in Colwyn Bay. The house was built by Thomas Hughes, a farmer from Llanrwst, who bought the plot when Lady Erskine's estate was put on sale in 1865. The house was named Ivy House after his old family home, Plas Iorwg. Part of the house was used as a grocer's shop and general store.
