  • [Continued from previous page]... Then the average rate of deaths was 28 in every 1,000 people.  Children under five years of age made up 46% of the total number of deaths, while those under 20 years of age made up 60%.

30% of people died from epidemic, endemic or contagious diseases, and the number was rising.

At the time of this report Aberdare had obtained permission to build a local market and slaughter house.  A description of the existing situation shows why this was needed:
