  • Thomas Martyn describes the work undertaken by the men carrying wood down from the mountains to the barges on the river.  Iron ore is also brought up the river from Lancashire.  Having watched the men, Thomas Martyn and his family sail onwards towards Tintern.

  • Thomas Martyn sees many lime kilns and describes how the horses are made to carry heavy timber.  He also draws a sketch to illustrate this.  He notices how the women 'seem to do all the business upon the road' and describes how they ride and dress.  They finally enter the town of Pontypool.
