A collection of items which belonged to Miss Margaret J. Howells, who was an air raid warden in Cardiff during the Second World War.
Miss Margaret J. Howells (b. 1904) was born and brought up in Evansfield Road, Llandaff North, Cardiff, where Welsh was the language of the home. She continued to live at this address for the rest of her life. She trained as a primary teacher in the 1920s at a time when college training for young ladies was unusual and taught at Birchgrove Primary School for most of her long teaching career.
During the Second World War, since Margaret Howells and her brother Iorwerth were actively involved in education, they were not required for service away from Cardiff. As a result, both played a full role in Air Raid Protection duties in Whitchurch and Llandaff North and recalled vivid experiences of night time watches thereafter.
These items belonged to Margaret Howells and are now in the possession of her niece, Susan Davies, in Aberystwyth.
