The Cardigan Militia was raised in 1644 by Colonel John Jones of Nanteos for Charles I, and was subsequently disbanded and reformed many times under several names before being finally disbanded in 1909. In the lists of officers over the centuries, the names of the local landowning families are conspicuous. Among many actions in which the Militia took part, perhaps the most memorable was their part (with the Pembroke Yeomanry) in capturing the French expedition of 1,500 men who landed near Fishguard on 22 February 1797.
Records of the Militia's visits to Aberystwyth for training are recorded in the minutes of the Town Council, when they asked permission to stay in the area and to practice firing cannon from the castle grounds. The Militia barracks in Aberystwyth were designed by James W. Szlumper and built by Thomas Davies in 1867-9. They were converted into 14 council houses between 1910 and 1914 and were demolished in 1980.
