During the 1960s and 1970s, people became more aware of the destructive effects of industrial methods and environmental consciousness started to grow. The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) was part of this movement and reflected many people's desire to live more sustainably.

The centre itself was created on the site of Llwyngwern slate quarry, near Machynlleth, which closed in 1951. CAT has now been in existence for over 25 years and its key areas of work are renewable energy, environmental building, energy efficiency, organic growing and alternative sewage systems.
