Coygan Cave has been excavated many times, with the most recent excavations taking place there in the 1960s, prior to the destruction of the site by quarrying activities. The finds from the cave include a typical last Glacial fauna, such as mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, reindeer and other cold tolerant species. The cave was also used as a hyaena den and as a shelter for Neanderthals, although not at the same time.
