Falcon D. Hildred was invited to work on the 'Newport Now' project during the centenary year of Newport Museum & Art Gallery, in I988. The Museum, which opened in 1888, was born out of Victorian pride and benefaction. It seemed fitting therefore, to celebrate this important anniversary by commissioning a pictorial review of how Newport had changed during the 20th century.

Hildred did not choose to draw obvious sites, as these were often already documented within the Museum collections. Instead he delved behind the scenes attempting to discover traces of Newport’s past through its industrial and architectural presence. The project was co-funded by the Development Department of Newport Borough Council and the MGC/V&A Grant Fund.
