Ironworking had been a feature of Ebbw Vale since the 18th century and, following a major rebuilding project in the late 1930s, Ebbw Vale steelworks became the first works in the country to integrate both iron and steel production. It closed in 1970, with many of the buildings in this collection of photograph being demolished in 1979.

Following the closure and demolition of Ebbw Vale steelworks, thought was given to the role that its derelict and industrially polluted site would serve in the future.

In the late 1980s work began on making good the land in preparation for the Garden Festival of Wales, held in 1992.
