Henry G. Gastineau (1791-1876) was a topographer and landscape artist. He trained as an engraver and then became a student at the Royal Academy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1812 and with the Oil and Watercolour Society between 1818 and 1820. He was elected an Associate of the Old Watercolour Society (AOWS) in 1821 and became a full member two years later. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, Switzerland and Italy. From 1827, Gastineau worked in Camberwell, south London as a drawing master and exhibited at the Watercolour Society for a total of fifty-eight years. He died on 17 January 1876. Gastineau's interpretation of the landscape was romantic and sublime concentrating on the wild and romantic scenery. He was influenced in his work by Turner and Varley, and his work has sometimes been mistaken for the work of Turner and Peter De Wint. Examples can be seen in a number of public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
