The diverse landscapes and scenery of Wales reflect the variety of rocks and geological structures found in the country. Hard volcanic rocks form the highest land, the mountains of Snowdonia in the north-west. In central and south-west Wales, sandstones and shales make up the Cambrian Mountains, while folds and faults in the rocks give the landscape a northeast-southwest grain. In south Wales the gently folded lower ground conceals younger limestones, shales and mudstones. The mineral wealth of Wales, its coal, slate, gold, lead, zinc and copper is also a product of its geological evolution.
