The photographer Roger Fenton (1819-69) is perhaps best known for his photographs of the Crimean War (1853-6) but, as this collection reveals, his subject matter also included landscapes and architectural features. After studying law at London University, Fenton trained as an artist in London and Paris before retuning to London where he actively pursued his interest in photography. However, his photographic career was extremely short and lasted only some twelve years. After spending a period in the Crimea where he pioneered 'documentary war photography', he returned to London to form the Photographic Society (now the Royal Photographic Society) in 1853. He took many photographs of Queen Victoria and her family and became official photographer to the British Museum.
