  • Drawing from a folio of paintings and sketches by Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) to be presented to the Royal Academy, London, in September 1953.

Frank Brangwyn was born in Bruges, Belgium, in 1867, the son of a Welshwoman. He was an extremely prolific painter and gained worldwide recognition at an early stage in his career. During the First World War he worked as an official war artist. In 1925 he was commissioned to design a series of decorative panels commemorating the war for the Royal Gallery, Westminster Palace, London. However, the commissioning panel deemed the paintings to be too colourful and lively and following a period of uncertainty, the panels were finally offered a new home in the new Guildhall building, Swansea. The new building and 'Brangwyn Hall' was officially opened in October 1934
