  • This watercolour of Llandudno was painted by R. Green, Hendre-waelod, in 1852, only a few years before the Victorian seaside resort was developed. The painting shows Pwllygwichiaid, the birthplace of the artist Hugh Hughes (1790-1863) in the foreground.

  • Mary Jones of Llanrwst (ne้ Lloyd) was the third wife of the Rev. Thomas Jones, Denbigh (1756-1820) - a prominent Calvinistic Methodist preacher. Hugh Hughes also painted a similar portrait of her husband - both portraits were painted on ivory.

  • This unusual panorama of a coastal scene is thought to represent the north coast of Anglesey. Hugh Hughes (1790-1863) was born in Llandudno and moved to Liverpool in 1802, where he was apprenticed to a wood engraver. He began painting portraits in 1812, receiving commissions principally from his Methodist co-religionists. Hughes moved to London in 1814 where he gradually established himself as a wood engraver. Between 1818 and 1821 he travelled throughout Wales, recording the landscape in both pictures and words, a journey which resulted in the publication of his highly successful 'Beauties of Cambria' in 1820. In 1832 Hughes returned to Caernarfon where he resumed his activities as an itinerant portrait painter.
