  • This mural painting was discovered in 1908 in an attic in the Gunter Mansion (34 - 40 Cross Street), Abergavenny.

During the latter half of the 17th century, Thomas Gunter, an attorney and staunch Roman Catholic, used the attic as a chapel with Fr David Lewis and Fr Phillip Evans. At this time, Catholics were persecuted in Britain and were forced to meet in secret meeting places such as this one. In the wave of anti-Roman Catholicism following the wake of the Titus Oates Plot in 1678, both priests were hanged, disembowelled and burnt at Usk.

  • The artist Hans Feibusch (1898-1998) was born in Germany and is perhaps best known for his religious-themed murals. These designs for a mural at Newport Civic Centre consist of 3 panels: the left panel shows Roman figures; the centre panel shows Greek figures, with an orator in the centre; while the right panel shows an outline of a classical building. There are a series of 12 murals by Feibusch, each over 6 metres high, around the central hall - their subject is the history of Newport. The murals were commissioned by Newport Borough Council in 1960, and painted during the period 1961-4.
