  • The polka was a Bohemian dance which appeared at the beginning of the 19th century and which spread across Europe 'like an epidemic' during the 1840s. It reached its climax in 1844. Robert Taylor, who published 'The Chepstow Polka', founded his business in 1835. By 1840 he was selling and binding books, printing and publishing, and running a library in Chepstow.
