  • During the later part of the Second World War, Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy, was held as a prisoner at Maindiff Court Military Hospital, Abergavenny. One night it is reported that a local landlord supplied the prisoner with two bottles of beer, receiving a signed label back in return for his troubles.

This supposed signature became something of a local legend and its popularity is illustrated here by its use on a postcard.

  • This postcard forms part of a collection of postcards which were mainly produced for the tourist market during the early decades of the twentieth century.  Many of the postcards showed images of famous Welsh landmarks, traditional Welsh costume, or extracts from traditional songs, etc. A large number featured humorous cartoons.
