Map of the Southern Regions of Argentina and Chile, London, Hurst & Blackett [image 1 of 3]
  • In 1902 Sir Thomas Hungerford Holdich (1843-1929), a surveyor and ex-soldier in the British Army, was sent to oversee the decision on the exact position of the border which separated Argentina and Chile. For many years, the governments of the two countries had disputed the issue , claiming that Cwm Hyfryd lay within their borders. As the state governments were unable to reach an agreement, the future of Cwm Hyfryd was placed in the hands of the local people. The inhabitants of Trevelin voted on the issue on 30 April 1902 and decided that the valley was part of Argentina rather than Chile.

Following his visit to Argentina, Holdich published an official report in his volume 'The Countries of the King's Award' (1904). It mentions the different aspects of life in Cwm Hyfryd: the houses, the people and the warm welcome that he received in the home of Martin Underwood. It is most interesting, however, that the details of the crucial vote on 30 April 1902 were not mentioned in the volume.

  • It was according to the rules listed in this book that the Bro Hyfryd New Mill Company was established. It is explained that those who are involved in the establishment of the new mill are to form a company and buy John D. Evans's share in the present mill. They intend to purchase a new mill and high-quality machines that will be suitable for grinding the entire produce of the settlement.

At the end of the book, there is a list of the individuals who have shares in the company.

  • On 29 December 1909, Llwyd ap Iwan, the son of the Rev. Michael D. Jones, was murdered at the cooperative store near his home at Nant y Pysgod. Robert Roberts, an employee at the store, witnessed the incident. In this letter to his parents, Roberts gives details of that fateful day. He also says how he and his colleagues had to break the bad news to Llwyd ap Iwan's wife, Myfanwy Ruffydd.

  • The town was originally known as Colonia 16 de Octobre as it was first established on 16 October 1888. It was renamed Trevelin, Welsh for 'mill town', after the first mill was constructed by John D. Evans in 1889.
