  • W. Edwards was a native of Denbigh who came to Merthyr Tydfil in September 1877 to serve his apprenticeship as one of H. M. Inspectors of Schools. In his memoirs, published in 1934, he provides a detailed account of the social, industrial and cultural life of Merthyr at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

  • A Summary of H. M. Inspectors' Reports for the ten months ending 31 Otober 1874:

'The new Schoolroom is spacious and well adapted for the purposes of Education, and the school has benefited materially by being transferred to it. The scholars are for the most part, very young, and but, few of them are consequently of an age to be presented for examination in standards. The instruction has therefore not made much progress as yet, but there is every prospect of further improvement in course of time. Additional attention should be paid to the preparation of the scholars in the first Standard in Arithmetic and of those in the Third and Fourth in both dictation and Arithmetic.

The ninth supplementary Rule would have been enforced had not this been the first Inspection of the school for a grant.

  • Summary of the Inspectors' Report for the year ending 31 October 1875:

'The attendance continues to increase, and the addition of a separate class-room for the Infants is now most desirable - the task of teaching so many children is clearly beyond the power of the mistress, and she is accordingly in want of competent assistance. The instruction more especially in writing and Arithmetic has hardly made as much progress as might have been expected during the past year, and hence it will be necessary to bestow greater pains upon the due preparation of the Scholars for their examinations in future. My Lords have ordered the grant to be reduced by one-tenth under Article 32C for defective instruction in writing and Arithmetic. The services of a transfer Pupil Teacher should be secured as soon as possible. Article 32C'.
