  • Sick inmates were often granted concessions or luxuries not normally granted to their fellow prisoners. In Februray 1821, for instance, Thomas Smith, who was noted as suffering from 'indigestion' (an ailment which may have been linked to malnutrition) was: 'Allowed a small quantity of Brandy for three times and a little Fire till further orders and allowed to walk in the yard'.

  • John Evans was prescribed 'half a Pint of Ale daily' to alleviate his 'indigestion' (possibly an ailment linked to malnutrition).
