  • Weston Biscuits was encouraged by Government to establish a factory at Llantarnam as a means of alleviating the effects of the recession in heavy industry during the 1930s.

  • The Weston Biscuits Factory was opened in the presence of both Mr Weston and Lord Nuffield. The Nuffield Trust, donated £33,000 to the project and Lord Nuffield, owner of the Morris car works, arrived in one of his own vehicles.

  • Saunders Valve Works was encouraged to establish a factory at Llantarnam by Government as a means of alleviating the effects of the recession in heavy industry during the 1930s. In this case the Treasury provided a grant of £30,000 under the 1937 Special Areas Act.

This new factory allowed, for the first time, all stages of the manufacturing process from pig iron to finished valve to be completed under a single roof.

  • Cooke's Explosive Works at Penrhyndeudraeth employed 600 people during the Second World War. The factory closed in the 1990s and the site was cleared and turned into a nature reserve.
