  • This timber framed building was pulled down in 1868. Behind it, the large tannery yard stretched back to the bank of the Monnow River. The pile in front of the tannery doors is either oak bark, newly delivered for the tanning process, or spent tan, the waste product which was spread on the streets during Assizes to muffle the sounds of horse-drawn traffic.
