Marble bowl from the 'Bronze Bell' wreck, early 18th century [image 1 of 2]
  • In the summer of 1978, members of a local sub-aqua team discovered the wreck of a heavily-armed galleon off the shore of Dyffryn Ardudwy (between Barmouth and Harlech, Merionethshire). It is thought that the ship foundered there in 1709, followed by a second ship, years later, which lay on top of the first wreck. One of the ships was also carrying a large cargo of precious Carrara marble from Genoa, Italy. This 2-ton piece of marble was raised from the wreck by its finders, the Cae Nest Group of divers, and donated to Barmouth town. Local sculptor Frank Cocksey was commissioned by Barmouth Town Council to create this work as part of the town's millennium celebrations.
