'Johnny Onions' tying strings of onions at Porthmadog, 20 February 1958 Photographed by Geoff Charles. 'Johnny Onions' was the nickname given to the Breton onion-sellers who travelled annually to Wales and other parts of Britain. The first 'Johnny Onions' or 'Sioni Winwns' landed in Plymouth in 1828, and they remained a familiar sight in many Welsh towns and villages up until the 1970s.
