Late Roman 'military' belt-buckle and plate. The plate is engraved on one side with fish and peacocks either side of the tree of life at the centre. The buckle is adorned with stylised dolphins and outward facing horses's heads. Found within the hillfort of Penycorddyn-mawr, one of the largest in north Wales. Several late third- and earlier fourth-century coin hoards from the site complements this piece of Late Roman metalwork. The nature of this late occupation is uncertain, but it may be linked with an extensive defensive system to protect the north Wales seaboard from the threat of Irish raiders.
