On the left, red woollen cloak from Carmarthenshire, mid 19th century, worn by donor's (Mrs M, D, Lewis) great grandmother, worn with Welsh hat. On the right, traditional costume worn by Elizabeth Evans for her wedding, Sychpant, Llanwenog, Cardiganshire, during the 1860s. The costume consists of a bedgown - open fronted gown, fitted bodice, no fastenings, a long skirt, open at front of thickly felted homespun cloth, navy with red stripes alternate, two narrow then one wide between two narrow; vertical on gown, horizontal on short sleeves; sleeves turned back and finished with black silk ribbon; bodice lined with cotton. Worn with sleeves of printed floral cotton, fringed (cut off earlier dress); apron worn over striped petticoat (unseen) is of dark blue flannel with lighter blue check, with initials EE embroidered in silk cross stitch. Length of bedgown: 3'9".
