  • The water wheel of a corn mill can be seen next to the locks, with a coal wharf alongside it. The thatched cottage on the left was part of Sergeants' Row, a terrace of cottages built by the Earl of Powis to house the families of militia sergeants during the Napoleonic Wars. The wharf building in the right foreground now houses the Powysland Museum.

  • The row of cottages known as Sergeants' Row stood near the canal at Welshpool. These were built as housing for local militia sergeants and their families during the Napoleonic Wars of the 19th century, and were later used by war veterans. The half-timbered and thatched cottages have not survived, and were clearly in poor condition at the time of this photograph.

  • A wide panoramic photograph featuring a line-up of heavy horses in Welshpool. The occasion is not identified but may be an inspection of animals for purchase by the Montgomeryshire Militia, who used draught horses as well as riding horses.
