  • Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was a prolific writer of fantasy fiction who provided an influence for many who have subsequently written in this field, however, in his later years this Caerleon born author suffered greatly from financial uncertainty. To ease his situation his friends arranged an 80th birthday lunch at which he was presented with a cheque consisting of donations from them all.
