  • Wartime rationing severely restricted the quantity and quality of available dressmaking fabric, and many would-be brides were forced to improvise in order to have a special dress for their wedding day.  Even second-hand wedding dresses were in short supply and in high demand, and many opted to make their dress from whatever fabrics could be found, including parachute silk, and in this case, curtains.
