'Bretons at Prayer' by Sydney Curnow Vosper, 1899
  • This photograph is of a replica of an original carving which lurks under the right foot of the effigy of Richard Herbert of Ewais - the grandson of William and Gwladus. He died in 1510 and his magnificent tomb stands against the south wall of the Herbert Chapel in St Mary's Priory Church, Abergavenny.

The carving was only discovered when the tomb was dismantled for restoration. It has not been seen for nearly 500 years. With the tomb restored, the original is no longer visible.

A bedesman is a person charged with saying the prayers of the rosary for the souls of the departed.

  • This painting is of a Bavarian scene and shows peasants on a prayer walk in the mountains. A shrine can be seen in the foreground. The brooding figure at the top of painting, who watches the procession, is a self portrait by the artist. This figure watches a female at the top of the procession; the model for this figure was Herkomer's mistress, Lulu Griffiths. Herkomer made his name as a painter of social realist and genre works. His first and greatest patron was Charles William Mansel Lewis of Stradey Castle, Llanelli. Having sold 'Der Bittgang' in 1883 to Sir Stafford Howard, Mansel Lewis painted a full-size copy with which to replace the original. Dimensions: 101cm x 147cm. Oil on canvas

  • A gathering of the Llandrindod Templars, photographed by prominent local photographer Thomas Roberts. These were members of a temperance society, a number of which were well supported around the end of the 19th century. Musical instruments are much in evidence here, and music, song and prayers all had important roles to play within such movements.
