  • This letter from the clergy of Merthyr Tydfil to 'The Church Times' is evidence of the widespread concern in the area resulting from the adoption of the Means Test for unemployment benefit.  It is unusual in that it indicates a degree of unity on the issue from all sides of the church: Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist and others.

Monday, Nov 22nd
Started from Wrexham on the 10-4 train to London.  Arrived at Paddington; from there to Charing Cross, then to Folkestone where I stayed the night.

Tuesday, Nov 23rd
Crossed to France on board the steamship 'Onward'.  Left at 11 o'clock in the morning, arrived at Boulogne at 12.30.  Stayed there until 4 o'clock.  From there to St Omar, Headquarters of the British Army in France.  Arrived there at 9 o'clock.  After reporting to the Headquarters went to sleep in a hotel called 'Grand Hotel du Commerce'.

Wednesday, Nov 24th
In the morning I went to see the Catholic Churches of the town - splendid buildings.  At 10 o'clock went to see the Principal Chaplain.  Dr Simons was not in his office.  He was over in England.  Had a warm welcome from his assistant - a Catholic - who instructed me to go to Rouen.  Visited one of the Hospitals in St Omar where I saw many Welshmen.  Left at 5 o'clock - the train was an hour ... '
