'Copy.
Llanelly House, Aug 18 1843.

Dear Sir,

I send you the copy of resolutions passed as you see at a vestry meeting. I was asked to attend, and found that this was the third or fourth meeting on the subject; promoted by your [?] friend, he was absent. He had so far inflamed their minds, that is was with the greatest difficulty I could get them anything like reason. They at last attended to my solicitations, and ended by passing the enclosed, and I have done my duty by sending it to you, thinking it right at the same time to inform you, which perhaps is hardly necessary, that I am not the instigator of this agitation though fully impressed with the exorbitant amount paid by this parish for Tithe.

I remain, my dear Sir
Yours faithfully
Wm Chambers Jnr.

R. Goring Thomas Esq
Llysnewydd,
Carmarthen.'
Letter from William Chambers to Rees Goring Thomas, 18 August 1843 [page 1 of 2]
  • R. Goring Thomas writes to acknowledge receipt of the letter dated 18 August 1843, which contained a copy of the resolutions passed by a meeting of parishoners of the parish of Llanelli.

Description by Evan D. Jones:

'He has received his letter with a copy of the resolution agreed to by some of the Llanelly tithe payers. He was fully sensitive of the very depressed state of all agricultureal produce and should no improvement take place between then and January he would be prepared to meet tithe payers as landlords and tithe owners ought to do under such circumstances. He felt however that he ought not to be pledged to any specific amount of abatement. If the tithes were exorbitant the parishoners themselves had fixed the amounts twelve years previously. The vicar of Llanelly who at that time managed the tithes for him put their value at £3000 pes annum and he considered that he was making a sacrifice in accepting what the parish offered. There need have been no apology on the part of Chambers for attending the meeting. He was very glad that he was there'.

  • Resolutions passed at a meeting of farmers and other inhabitants of the parishes of Llanelli, Llan-non, Pembrey and Llangendeirne, held on Mynydd Sylen, between Llan-non and Pontyberem, 25 August 1843. The meeting was chaired by William Chambers and addressed by Hugh Williams. The resolutions passed related to tolls and the expenditure of the county stock, commending several landowners for reducing their rents and condemming Rees Goring Thomas for his 'unfair and decietful' behaviour with regard to the Llanelli tithes.

  • A letter containing a copy the resolutions passed by a meeting of parishoners of the parish of Llanelli, held on Mynydd Sylen, 17 August 1843. The meeting was chaired by William Chambers and was held in protest against the payment of a higher rate of tithe to Rees Goring Thomas, Llysnewydd. Also included is a copy of the resolutions passed at a meeting of the parishoners of Llanelli held at Llanelli Town Hall on 31 August 1843. The letter also contains details of the attack by followers of Rebecca on Gelliwernen farm, Llan-non, the home of John Edwards, agent to Rees Goring Thomas.

  • This letter was sent from Rees Goring Thomas in reply to a letter, dated 2 September 1843, received from William Chambers, concerning the payment of tithes and the meeting at Mynydd Sylen.

Description by Evan D. Jones:

'He must have misunderstood what he had said. He stated that he would return Chambers's tenants the shilling for the previous year, and that he would not require any tithe payer to pay it this year or in future. Had that been explained to the meeting such a resolution would not have been passed. What was said at Mynydd Sylen was no answer to the fact that the parishoners through their Tithe Committee had fixed the amount with him twelve years previously at £2100. The statement about his agent's observation as to the tithe being fixed at 1/3 in the pound might be correct, but he had never heard of the circumstance before he saw it in the resolution. He understood the rent charge had been unequally assessed but the appointment of the apportioner did not rest with him. The mistake about the shilling had been made not by his agent but by Mr. Geo. Goode who was duly appointed by the Chairman of the Quarter Sessions under the provisions of an Act of Parliament'.
