The Orthodox Church, Hughesovka
  • The New Russia Company set up by John Hughes, a Welshman, established a major iron works in the Ukraine in the 1870s. The town which grew up around the works was called Hughesovka. This photograph shows a blast furnace being blessed by priests before a crowd of dignitaries and workmen. Francis Davies, who worked at Hughesovka from 1890, can be seen at the back of the crowd, between the two priests, with his baby daughter Mary in his arms.

  • The town of Hughesovka, Russia, grew up around the iron works established by Welshman John Hughes in the 1870s.  In this photograph taken from a distance the Russian Orthodox church can be seen clearly.
