The Reading Room, Barmouth Sailors' Institute
The Barmouth Sailors' Institute was erected in 1890 and is a rare surviving example of its kind. Institutes of this type were once very common in coastal communities throughout the British Isles. They were important meeting places for sailors and their families and served both a social and educational need. In addition to the fine Victorian Reading Room which remains very much as it was when built, the Institute houses a Billiard Room which is still used today. A portrait of the founder of the Institute, Canon Edward Hughes, is seen hanging on the wall of the Institute in the centre of this photograph.
