Sampler, made in Cardiff, 1809 Woollen canvas ground, embroidered with coloured silks in cross stitch. Border of floral wavy stem on three sides. Divided into three compartments by lines of wavy stem. Top: conventional flowering plant flanked by cornucopiae and crowned female figures symbolic of justice, holding scales in one hand and torch in the other, with religious text. In centre: Adam and Eve, tree and serpent, flying cupids, sun, moon and stars, windmill, flowering tree, animal and bird motifs. Bottom: Flowering plants, conventional trees, dogs and maker's inscription and date within outline. Inscription: Love and Fear God Elizabeth Jones April 1809 Dimensions: 42.5 x 31.5 cm
