Crimping board, 18th century
To obtain finely gathered frills used as decoration on caps, aprons, nightgowns and underskirts, a crimping board and roller was used form the early 18th century. It consisted of a grooved board and a grooved roller. The damp starched fabric was laid on the board and a crimping effect was obtained by pressing the roller over the fabric.
