The 'Foelas Crwth', made in 1742 by Richard Evans
The crwth was originally an instrument similar to the lyre, played by plucking the strings with the fingers. First mentioned in Welsh literature in the tenth century, the instrument was played with a bow from the eleventh century onwards. Although the crwth fell out of use around the mid-eighteenth century, a growing interest in traditional instruments in recent years has led to a modest revival, and crwth-playing workshops are now regularly held across Wales.
