This photograph shows the exterior of D. Thomas's tailor shop, at the Musem of Welsh Life. The shop originally stood at Cross Inn, Cardiganshire, and is a typical example of the many tailors' shops which once existed throughout Wales. The tailor's shop was a place which not only contributed to the self-sufficiency of the community, providing an essential service from the days when ready-made clothing was not available and adapting to the retail trade in later times, but also, like the blacksmith's shop, was a central part of the social life of the village which has now disappeared. The building itself was originally constructed in 1896 and used as an animal feed store. David Thomas purchased the building in the early 1920s and added the front shop almost immediately. The interior of the shop comprises the workshop area at the back, which is the original part of the building, a small fitting room, and in front a retail shop area. The shop closed down in 1967 and remained untouched until 1987 when it was donated to the Museum of Welsh Life by David Thomas's daughters.
