  • A rather enthusiastically hand-tinted postcard view of the Boathouse on the riverside area known as the Gro (or Groe) at Builth Wells. When 'taking the waters' was still fashionable in the district, hiring rowing boats was one of the healthy outdoor pursuits available to visitors.

  • Very formally attired holidaymakers at Park Well, which housed one of the natural mineral water sources at Builth Wells, from the heyday of the fashion for 'taking the waters'. One of a range of prints published by Newman & Co.
Park Well, Builth Wells, 19th century
  • An early 1900s postcard memento for holiday visitors to Builth Wells, following the fashion for 'taking the waters' at the inland spas of mid-Wales. The wells at Builth were somewhat overshadowed by the more popular nearby resort of Llandrindod Wells, and there is little trace of them today.

  • The attractive setting of Glanne Wells just outside the market town of Builth Wells. This was one of the two mineral water springs in the area. However, Builth never achieved the success of Llandrindod Wells a few miles to the north in attracting substantial numbers of visitors during the vogue for spa holidays. The pavilion next to the pump house can be seen through the trees.

  • The Pump Room at the mineral water spring of Park Wells near Builth Wells. Not a great deal of demand for taking the waters on this particular day in the early 1900s, it would appear.
The Pump Room at Park Wells, Builth Wells, 1900s
  • The spa equivalent of the traditional seaside holiday postcard. One of a series of humorous cards for visitors to the spa town of Llandrindod Wells in the heyday of the fashion for 'Taking the Waters'. Drawn by Thackeray and published by Raphael Tuck & Sons.
