Corris Band on Empire Day, 24 May 1906
  • During the 19th century, the brass band was used by industrialists as a way of bringing workers out from the pubs and as a means of fostering a spirit of brotherhood amongst them.

Robert Thompson Crawshay of Cyfarthfa Castle created his band by luring professional musicians to play in the area - a bone of contention with other contemporary bands. He bought the finest instruments he could, including some by Austrian manufacturers, whilst other bands had to make do with British instruments.

  • Robert Thompson Crawshay staffed the Cyfarthfa Band with professional musicians and provided them with some of the finest instruments available. Even so, the band rarely took part in competitions, being primarily a private band used for functions such as balls, garden parties and regattas.

After Robert Thompson Crawshay's death and his son's departure from Merthyr, the band became a municipal band, but they didn't thrive under their new management and were disbanded in 1928.
