  • Tommy Farr, a former coalminer from Tonypandy, was among the most courageous heavyweights of his era.

His most famous bout was against Joe Louis, known as the Brown Bomber, on 30 August, 1937.  The young Welshman went 15 rounds with the American before finally losing on points.  After the contest, Farr was praised for his performance against a man who had dominated the boxing scene since the war.

  • Jim Driscoll was born in 1880 into a poor family from the docks area of Cardiff.  He was known as the

  • Howard Winstone was a featherweight from Merthyr Tydfil.   He turned professional in 1959 and was unbeaten for his first 34 contests.  He won the British Featherweight title in 1961 and in 1968 he acheived his ambition of becoming World Featherweight Champion, beating Mitsunori Seki of Japan in the 9th round.
