Drawstring bag embroidered by Sarah Ponsonby, one of 'The Ladies of Llangollen', 18th century
  • This handbag was made in Montgomery during the early stages of the Crimean War (1853-6). The ladies of the town would sit in the Town Hall tearing up strips of newspaper to fill the palliasses (mattresses) for the troops. This handbag was made during this period. Strips of newsprint have been plaited and sewn together before being lined with fabric.
