The Quarter Sessions were established as a result of the 1536 Act of Union when the Office of Justice of the Peace was introduced into Wales. The Quarter Sessions met four times a year when sitting Justices of the Peace came together to administer the government of their respective county. The records of the Caernarfonshire Quarter Sessions are the oldest records of their type to have survived in Wales, and date from 1541. Although the proceedings of the Quarter Sessions relate mainly to the administration of law and order, they are also concerned with subjects such as the building and maintenance of roads, bridges and public buildings, licensing, and the administration of poor relief.
