Ship building was an important industry in Aberaeron during the 19th century. Many craftsmen were engaged in this enterprise, and they built fine sailing ships. The industry waned on the advent of steam and by the close of the 19th century it was non-existent.
These paintings of ships and ships' equipment were brought together for an exhibition held in Aberaeron in 1971. After the exhibition closed, a photographic record of the exhibits was compiled by Mr Gwilym Morgan Jones and placed in Ceredigion County Library.
